Field notes

Occasional notes from the house.

Short writings on how we work and what we are learning. No cadence, no noise — just when there is something worth saying.

Why we start by listening

Every project in the house begins the same way — with a conversation, not a quote. We ask what you are making, who it is for, and what would happen if it disappeared. It sounds unbusinesslike. It is the most businesslike thing we do.

Listening first keeps us honest about capability. If a job needs a specialist we do not have yet, we say so in the first meeting — and, more often than not, we know a collaborator in the collective who fits.

Honest capability, and what it means for pricing

Honest capability is our principle that a small house should say what a small house can do. It shapes pricing too: we do not publish a rate card, because publishing one would either undersell the complex work or overprice the simple kind.

Instead, every project gets a written scope and a proposal you can take apart line by line. You should be able to see exactly what you are paying for — and what you are not.

On the name — symphony, and haus

A symphony is many parts held together by a shared intent — no instrument apologises for being an instrument. The haus is the structure that lets them play together: studio, editions, collective, and one day, a physical space.

The spelling is a small nod to the German word for house — a building, yes, but also a family name for the people inside it.
